新兴力量运动会，是印尼总统苏加诺为冲破某些人控制和垄断国际体育组织而倡导的。1963年11月10至22日，第一届新兴力量运动会在印度尼西亚的首都雅加达举行。运动会共设21个比赛项目，有欧、亚、非拉美等洲的51各国家和地区报名，参赛的有46个国家和地区的2000多名运动员。中国代表队在贺龙副总理率领下，参加了这次运动会。中国运动员打破了两项世界纪录，一共获得303枚奖牌。
